Walk With Jesus
Sermon April 19, 2026 Luke 24:13–35
Walk with Jesus
Reverend Fred Okello
As graduation approached during my final year of college, life was not on my mind. I was worried. We had children. My wife was in school. And I needed a job.
So, I applied. Application after application. But each company sent the same response: "Young man, we are sorry, but..." But soon there were no letters, meaning no interviews. Nothing. It was discouraging. Very discouraging.
My wife could tell that I was frustrated. Sometimes, when the letters arrived, she would even hide them from me because she did not want to see me more frustrated.
But about two weeks before graduation, God showed up! Our academic dean, one of the nicest gentlemen from England, called me one afternoon. He asked me to take a walk with him.
I was not thinking much about it at the time. I did not think it had anything to do with me getting a job. So, I assumed he just wanted to stretch his legs or take a break from the office. So we walked. About five kilometers out into the neighborhood, just shooting the breeze.
And right there in the middle of that walk, he changed my life.
He told me that every year, the faculty invited one graduating student to join them as a faculty member. Of course, I had heard about this. But I knew I had one requirement I was not eligible for, so I never even considered it.
But that day, as we were walking, he told me that I had been chosen.
Can you imagine? All the waiting. All the uncertainty was gone. Seems like months of struggle all came down to that moment. Losing parents, raising children, trying to make it through school, and trying to figure it all out felt like my whole world had fallen apart. But here, in that moment, everything changed for our family. I could work. And my wife could finish school.
Two disciples were walking on the road to a village called Emmaus. Jesus Christ met them while they were walking.
Jesus walked with them that day. He talked with them. He listened to them. But the Bible says they did not realize it was Jesus.
Do you see that? Jesus was right there walking and talking with them. And they had no idea who it was.
How many times does that happen to us? We think we are all alone, walking through problems. We think we are the only ones going through painful things. We try to figure it out on our own. But that is not true.
Jesus was walking with them that day when they thought life was over. He opened up the Scriptures to them. He allowed them to see things from a different perspective. And when He broke bread with them later that day, their eyes were opened, and they finally understood.
Do you remember what they said? “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road?” Luke 24:32
Friend, when I think about my story, it is the same…I thought it was just a walk. But as we walked, He had the answer all along. He had already given me the best answer to my prayers, but I was too busy complaining, frustrated to realize that He was walking with me.
Friends, sometimes God does not meet us in miraculous ways. No, he meets us while walking… While we wait, he walks with us…While we are walking to school, walking from the car, walking to class, walking to that hospital, or walking through whatever storm, He is walking with us! He is there.
Today, I want to invite you to simply…Walk with Him. Walk with Him when life makes sense, and when it does not. Walk with Him when you know exactly where you are going and when you have no idea. Walk with Him when life is good, and when it feels like it is falling apart.
Walk while you are walking to school or class. Walk with Him on the road. You may not see it that day…but just wait. One day, you will look back, and suddenly, you will realize that He was with you all along.
